I kinda suspected this might be the case.
Books as fashion accesories. Its nothing new, really. But its still a little bit odd when you wonder if people are really reading your books or if they just want to look cool. But, of course, we know who the literary equivalent of Burberry is...
There are many explanations for the depressing success of The Da Vinci Code. But one is that the first readers could flaunt the book as if it were some tome on Renaissance painting. The vulgar herd followed - and will, apparently, thunder on till kingdom come.

I don't think it's fair to say The Da Vinci Code is the book equivalent of Burberry. A pair of brown polyester Mr Byrite slacks, maybe.
